"Today's kids may be the first generation in history to have a shorter life expectancy that their parents." This shocking prediction, made by U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona, may be the result of the current trend of childhood obesity. Despite the efforts of many agencies and organizations to emphasize and encourage healthy lifestyles, statistics tell us that more children are obese, inactive, and leading unhealthy lifestyle than a generation ago.
Recently CBS News addressed the following concern from a report published by the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity: "Nearly half of the children in North and South America will be overweight by 2010, up from what recent studies say is about one-third. The concern is for the increase in chronic problems brought on by obesity - heart disease, diabetes, and stroke - which will inundate the medical system." All over the world, the report continues, children are "bombarded" to eat all the wrong foods. For this study, data were gathered on school-age children in 25 countries and preschoolers in 42 countries. The conclusion of the study was that "the trend of increasing obesity is fueled by more sedentary lives and the increasing availability of junk food."
